Bazooka antenna PDF Print E-mail
Bazooka antenna is a simple HF antenna that I have tried few years ago with a remarkable results. It's constructed from a wire and coaxial cable. Advantage is a is a great bandwidth and cheap construction.

It's based on the principle of folded dipole. The arms are shortened by coaxial cable. Bazooka antenna could be hanged like a dipole, vertical dipole, slooper or inverted Vee.
Bazooka antenna

Dimensions for HF bands
Frequency (kHz) Total length (m) Coax length (m), velocity factor .66 Wire length (m)
3600 19,72 10,80 8,92
7050 10,07 5,52 4,55
14100 5,03 2,76 2,27
21100 3,36 1,84 1,52

Antenna construction is showed on the picture. Needed are:
  • two pieces of Cu wire, 2 – 3mm diameter
  • two pieces of coax cable, RG-58, RG-8, RG-213
  • a center insulator
  • two end insulators
  • two electrical claps
  • six plastic holders for cable

  • Feeding point detail Center insulator can be made easily from the Plexiglas. Cut a small plate (80 x 80 mm) and drill holes for coax holders. Now join coaxial ends together according to the schematic diagram above. Care for waterproof! Use a silicone sealant.

Now measure an exact lengths of coax cables and simply cut them. On the live end solder an outer conductor. Join the wire with a clap. Measure your wire out and add a 50cm reserve (for egg insulator and fine tune). Strip the wire and attach to the egg insulator.

Bazooka antenna is very advisable antenna for lower bands, especially for 80m band due the great bandwidth. Remember that the mounting height should be at least 20m above the ground, if it's higher the results are much better.

Keith Sproul, WU2Z Critically Injured at ABQ Balloon Festival:
One dead, one critically injured after 'Wings of Wind' balloon crashes into powerline near N.M. 528. The two people who were aboard the "Wings of Wind" hot-air balloon when it crashed this morning have been identified by Kathie Leyendecker, a spokeswoman for the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, according to The Associated Press. Killed in the crash was Stephen Lachendro, and the balloon's creator, Keith Sproul, was critically injured in the accident, Leyendecker said. Leyendecker said she did not know where the victims were from, nor who was flying the balloon. The balloon was registered to a New Jersey pilot, she told the AP. Lachendro was found dead at the scene lying on the side of a ditch, Sproul was unconscious and was flown by helicopter to a local hospital, authorities said. A hospital spokesman said Sproul was in critical condition today afternoon, the AP reported.

Spectrum Defense: 'More Work To Do':
Defending and enhancing access to the Amateur Radio spectrum is the primary mission of the ARRL. According to ARRL Chief Executive Officer David Sumner, K1ZZ, the League has not only protected the bands, but has also added several new ones, despite exponential growth in the variety and number of radio frequency devices in the hands of consumers and businesses. "Even our most disappointing defeat -- the loss of the bottom 40 percent of the 220 MHz band some two decades ago -- gave us upgraded status, from shared to exclusive, in the remaining 60 percent of the band," he said.

    The K7RA Solar Update
A familiar sight appeared this week, as a sunspot emerged for one day, then was gone. Based on its magnetic polarity and high position in our Sun's southern hemisphere, sunspot 1003 was a new Solar Cycle 24 sunspot; like all the other recent sunspots, it was short lived.

I posted this here: http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/yacht-crews/10048-my-life-monaco.html#post65529 I have memories of my time based in Monte Carlo as a Steward on board Milamba IV, a 108 foot steel displacement Feadship with a very British (Campers and Nicholson refit) style and British crew. Today, James popped over and helped me shove a 16 foot lightweight pole into the top of the rotator on the tower. I attached a small video camera to the top of the pole. New Winter 2008 CQWW Vertical
When the kids start to play less outside in the winter, I like to experiment with a new vertical each year. This year it’s a 12m spiderbeam vertical fibreglass pole loosely wound with some hard drawn copper wire. A waste pipe supplies the engineering for the radials with the SG230 doing the matching. This allows [...]
