Bazooka antenna PDF Print E-mail
Bazooka antenna is a simple HF antenna that I have tried few years ago with a remarkable results. It's constructed from a wire and coaxial cable. Advantage is a is a great bandwidth and cheap construction.

It's based on the principle of folded dipole. The arms are shortened by coaxial cable. Bazooka antenna could be hanged like a dipole, vertical dipole, slooper or inverted Vee.

GaAs FET markings PDF Print E-mail
Radio amateur constructors are using GaAs FET transistors in low-noise preamplifier for VHF, UHF and SHF. If you buy a new GaAs FET from RadioShack it's easy to know which type you have buyed.

But we must carry of GaAs FET marking when using soldered transistors. Packages are so small! There isn't any other marking like a point or dot. In the following table are GaAs FET markings of most transistors:

New DK7ZB's ultralight yagis PDF Print E-mail
Martin Steyer DK7ZB has published a new conception of his yagis. These yagis are cheap and simple to built. It's an ideal solution for portable use due their extreme lightweight.

DK7ZB has designed a range from 2el. yagi till 7el. yagi for 2m band and 9el. yagi till 14el. yagi for 70cm band. Used are aluminium welding rods with 3 or 4mm diamaeter, boom is made of PVC-tubes with 16mm, 20mm or 25mm diameter, the element holders are the clamps for these tubes.

All yagis have an impedance of 50 Ohms and are feeded with a lambda/4-choke for 2m and a 3/4-lambda-choke for 70cm. This 50ohm design has greater bandwidth and less critical dimensions althrouht they have a less gain.

Description of DK7ZB yagi is here.

PTT footswitch PDF Print E-mail
PTT footswitch PTT footswitch is an addition that was developed especially for SSB contesting. Contesting does not allow to use a hand microphone – hands are used to control RIG, rotator, power amplifier, antenna switches and logging contacts. So we decide to use a headset with microphone with a PTT footswitch.

Commercial headsets for amateur radio are very expensive. So we choose cheaper headset for personal computer with an electret microphone and RX/TX switching is done by homemade PTT footswitch.

Ham Operators Connect Plantation to World:
PLYMOUTH - The Whitman Amateur Radio Club conducted a two-day special event at Plimoth Plantation the weekend following Thanksgiving. Twenty-two area amateur radio operators (or HAMs) set up six base stations and portable antennas and exchanged contacts with 216 other amateur radio operators in 32 states, 8 foreign countries and 3 Canadian Provinces, according to club President Paul Burbine (N1VTI). The HAM operators spread the word about Plimoth Plantation over the airways, explaining about the living museum and the amazement of visitors who interact with interpreters trained to explain the realities of early Colonial life, in the language of 17th century without acknowledging life beyond the 1620s.

160m SSB Club Calls Contest - November 2008
107 in the log. I’ve no idea what my score was since I used N1MM’s DX Serial Contest template to do the logging and the miscellaneous field for logging random text did a hopeless job of being able to edit long club names efficiently. The last time I entered this contest, my log was called into [...]

Waterproof PL259 connectors for Ecoflex
I’ve been lucky enough to purchase 100 meters of Ecoflex 15 recently and the solderless connectors are awesome. Available for Aircell 7 (RG213 replacement) and Ecoflex 10 (Westflex replacement) and this giant 15mm diameter stuff, once fitted they are completely waterproof. My experience with all these products started with me laying down a few runs for my [...]

SSB Field Day 2008 - M0XXT
2008 will go down as a wet year. Both VHF NFD and SSB FD was a soaking experience. Luckily, as with most close knit teams, we laughed it off and worked through it, however a tough act all the same. I didn’t take too many photos due to the extreme wet weather however I managed [...]

Configuring Postfix to act as a backup MX server
Lately I have been playing with Postfix, which I needed to use as backup MX for some of my domains. Initially, I was using Zimbra, but I would have to have quite powerfull server to run Zimbra for just forwarding emails / setting it up as backup MX server. Postfix is in this case much [...]
