FCC to Drop Morse Testing for All Amateur License Classes
In an historic move, the FCC has acted to drop the Morse code requirement for all Amateur Radio license classes. The Commission adopted the long-awaited Report and Order (R&O) in WT Docket 05-235, the "Morse code" proceeding, and released it December 19.
The effective date of the FCC's R&O will be 30 days after publication in the Federal Register - most likely in February.
Currently, Amateur Radio applicants must pass a 5 WPM Morse code test to operate on HF. The FCC's action will eliminate that requirement all around.
Changes to AO-51 CTCSS Access Tone
This week Drew Glasbrenner KO4MA, AMSAT-NA VP Operations reported that the
CTCSS 67 Hz subaudible tone used on AO-51's uplink to enable the FM transponder has been turned off
. Carrier access is all that is re- quired to access this satellite.

Yaesu CAT cable
If you would like to use a benefits that offers computer controlled RIG you need to use a CAT interface between PC and RIG. I have build few simple CAT cable for me and my friends for Yaesu FT-857.
The CAT cable is based on IC MAX232. It’s real simple circuit, works fine, but be careful – wrong voltages on RxD and TxD might damage the CPU in transceiver.

The Geminids 2007
This is one of the best meteor showers of the year and never seems to disappoint observers. Geminid's activity can be seen on
December 7th till 17th 2006
. Results from recent years have shown the peak
ZHR to be over 100 and to remain above 70 per hour for about 24 hours
. The shower is typically rich in bright meteors, but produces few trained meteors.
The best time for meteor-work shall be on
2006 December 14th, within 02 to 11 UT for Europeans
. Please do remember that the shower is very useful for side- and backscatter test (best radiant-times 23 to 03UT) and the shower will have a break between 11 to 17 UT (radiant under horizon in middle Europe).

HamRadio DeLuxe eliminates Doppler effect
Sattelite operation is requiring a lot of hands. If you would like to have a good signal on the uplink and downlink you need to:
rotate antennas in azimuth
elevating antennas
tune RX (TX) downlink
tune TX (RX) uplink
speak into the microphone
log the QSO
LEO FM satellites like SO-50 and AO-51 have an uplink in 2m band. Doppler effect is smaller than on 70cm band. It’s enough to tune the transmitter on uplink frequency. But on 70cm band is Doppler effect three times bigger and it’s required to tune receiver. FM modulation is readable also by 1 or 2 kHz inaccurancy but it’s still problem. There is very nice solution called Satellite Tracking in HamRadio Deluxe program.

ICOM handheld radio programmer
We have build a simple programmer for ICOM IC F-11 handheld radio. It’s simply looked VHF easy to use handheld radio that could be used also in radioamateur bands. This is a military spec. rugged radio that can take abuse and keep working. It has only few buttons and controls without any LCD display – setup is done by computer.
My friend bought one on the rally and wan’t to set new frequencies, CTCSS – so we have build a simple programmer that could be used for ICOM handheld radios, not only F11.

Ham Operators Connect Plantation to World:
PLYMOUTH - The Whitman Amateur Radio Club conducted a two-day special event at Plimoth Plantation the weekend following Thanksgiving. Twenty-two area amateur radio operators (or HAMs) set up six base stations and portable antennas and exchanged contacts with 216 other amateur radio operators in 32 states, 8 foreign countries and 3 Canadian Provinces, according to club President Paul Burbine (N1VTI). The HAM operators spread the word about Plimoth Plantation over the airways, explaining about the living museum and the amazement of visitors who interact with interpreters trained to explain the realities of early Colonial life, in the language of 17th century without acknowledging life beyond the 1620s.

ARISS Celebrates International Education Week
With all the educational opportunities the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station program (ARISS) provides, it's no wonder that the organization has captured the attention of the US Department of Education (DOEd). According to ARRL ARISS Program Manager Rosalie White, K1STO, the DOE has been tracking ARISS's activities for a long time: "The Department of Education invited ARISS to help celebrate the ninth annual International Education Week (IEW) by coordinating three contacts with the International Space Station (ISS) during IEW, November 17-21. How could we say no?" International Education Week is a joint initiative of the US Department of Education and US Department of State.

160m SSB Club Calls Contest - November 2008
107 in the log. I’ve no idea what my score was since I used N1MM’s DX Serial Contest template to do the logging and the miscellaneous field for logging random text did a hopeless job of being able to edit long club names efficiently. The last time I entered this contest, my log was called into [...]
Waterproof PL259 connectors for Ecoflex
I’ve been lucky enough to purchase 100 meters of Ecoflex 15 recently and the solderless connectors are awesome. Available for Aircell 7 (RG213 replacement) and Ecoflex 10 (Westflex replacement) and this giant 15mm diameter stuff, once fitted they are completely waterproof. My experience with all these products started with me laying down a few runs for my [...]
