The Leonid meteor shower 2006
The Leonids are the debris of Comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. Radiant is active during 14th — 21st November. The calculated peak time of the outburst is on
November 19th around 04:45 UT
(Universal Time = Greenwich Mean Time). It will probably not last very long (i.e. meteor activity will rise and fall quite sharply. The peak
ZHR
(Zenithal Hourly Rate = number of meteors visible to someone who has perfect observing conditions; real rates are usually somewhat smaller)
for the 2006 outburst as 100 - 150
.
New DK7ZB's ultralight yagis
Martin Steyer DK7ZB has published a new conception of his yagis. These yagis are cheap and simple to built. It's an ideal solution for portable use due their extreme lightweight.
DK7ZB has designed a range from 2el. yagi till 7el. yagi for 2m band and 9el. yagi till 14el. yagi for 70cm band. Used are aluminium welding rods with 3 or 4mm diamaeter, boom is made of PVC-tubes with 16mm, 20mm or 25mm diameter, the element holders are the clamps for these tubes.
All yagis have an impedance of 50 Ohms and are feeded with a lambda/4-choke for 2m and a 3/4-lambda-choke for 70cm. This 50ohm design has greater bandwidth and less critical dimensions althrouht they have a less gain.
Description of
DK7ZB yagi
is here.
PTT footswitch
PTT footswitch is an addition that was developed especially for SSB contesting. Contesting does not allow to use a hand microphone – hands are used to control RIG, rotator, power amplifier, antenna switches and logging contacts. So we decide to use a headset with microphone with a PTT footswitch.
Commercial headsets for amateur radio are very expensive. So we choose cheaper headset for personal computer with an electret microphone and RX/TX switching is done by homemade PTT footswitch.

AMSAT Phase 3E satellite
AMSAT Phase 3E, abbreviated P3E, will become the new satellite to enable stable communications from continent to continent for radio amateurs.
The satellite, which is already under construction, should be ready for
launch in mid-2007
. With its transponders for
145, 435, 1268 and 2400 MHz
, it continues the successes of its predecessors AO-10, AO-13 and AO-40. Radio amateurs, who were already active via those satellites, can be active over P3E immediately. Newcomers often already have at hand the most important elements for making radio contacts over the satellite.

KM16 - Island Falkonera
Between
15-19 November
, a Greek radioamateur team will activate for firsttime in history the rock-island FALKONERA (grid locator KM16WU, IOTA: EU-113, MIA: MG-087) and also the lighthouse of island (ARLHS: GRE 012 , WLOTA: L0740, TWLHD-WLH: SV-029) by using the special call
SX8F
. This rock-island is ununhabited and protected area by NATURA-2000 treaty.
The pedition is mainly for HF-activity, but the team is also found with several VHF - UHF antennas, so it's a great possibility for a few QSOs on Satellites.
V-U Antennas:
VHF: 1 x 6 elem. Yagi
1 x 4 elem. Quad
1 x 9 elem. Yagi
UHF: 1 x 10 elem. Yagi
1 x 11 elem. Yagi
..stay tuned !

How to measure accu voltage
The life of accu cells is depending on the style of use. Not proper accu discharning and charging is a short way to destroy them. Many amateur transceivers are able to work also on low voltage except the accumulator is fully discharged. So how to measure the voltage without voltmeter or multimeter on portable?
Simple indicators are showing only two states – charged and discharged. This is not enough to plan operation and early know when is accumlator low. Described indicator is measuring voltage in 5-steps, it's easy to build and cheap.

MU5W in CQ WW Contest
From the 12th-19th Oct 2006 we will be PMTDX-Group (Purple Mug Team DX Group) active from the
Island of ALDERNEY EU114 Guernsey and Dependencies like MU5W
.
One of them is Oliver - MW3SDO, the second is Anthony - MW0JZE from LLanelli in South Wales and third is well know Tim - M3SDE from Coventry in UK. Tim is also a QSL manager. QSL details are on QRZ.com, bureau QSL are welcome.
All three guys will be on for full CQWW contest this weekend. They will work as multi operator with one radio, using only 100W and two antennas - Mosley beam for 10-15-20 and Carolina Windom 160 special for 160-80-40.
Power supply for amateur radio
Transceivers with an output around 5W (CB transceivers, VHF handhelds, QRP rigs) are needing around 1,5A DC current and 13,8V voltage. Favourite ICs 7812 have an internal current limitation on 1A. That's the reason why are they used only like reference stabilisator in bigger power supplies.
Power supply with special ICs like LM723 are unnecessarilly comlicated. PSU with Zener diode like reference voltage are not very favourite. Many constructors are forgotting on stabilisators with 1.5 or 3A currents.

Ham Operators Connect Plantation to World:
PLYMOUTH - The Whitman Amateur Radio Club conducted a two-day special event at Plimoth Plantation the weekend following Thanksgiving. Twenty-two area amateur radio operators (or HAMs) set up six base stations and portable antennas and exchanged contacts with 216 other amateur radio operators in 32 states, 8 foreign countries and 3 Canadian Provinces, according to club President Paul Burbine (N1VTI). The HAM operators spread the word about Plimoth Plantation over the airways, explaining about the living museum and the amazement of visitors who interact with interpreters trained to explain the realities of early Colonial life, in the language of 17th century without acknowledging life beyond the 1620s.

160m SSB Club Calls Contest - November 2008
107 in the log. I’ve no idea what my score was since I used N1MM’s DX Serial Contest template to do the logging and the miscellaneous field for logging random text did a hopeless job of being able to edit long club names efficiently. The last time I entered this contest, my log was called into [...]
Waterproof PL259 connectors for Ecoflex
I’ve been lucky enough to purchase 100 meters of Ecoflex 15 recently and the solderless connectors are awesome. Available for Aircell 7 (RG213 replacement) and Ecoflex 10 (Westflex replacement) and this giant 15mm diameter stuff, once fitted they are completely waterproof. My experience with all these products started with me laying down a few runs for my [...]
SSB Field Day 2008 - M0XXT

How to configure postfix to reject spams

Configuring Postfix to act as a backup MX server
Lately I have been playing with Postfix, which I needed to use as backup MX for some of my domains. Initially, I was using Zimbra, but I would have to have quite powerfull server to run Zimbra for just forwarding emails / setting it up as backup MX server. Postfix is in this case much [...]
